ROK - Reconnecting Our Kin

  • ROK is a project of the Sage Centre.

ROK is created by a reunited adoptee & Psychotherapist and a reunited mother & Social Service Worker. Their personal and professional histories led to recognizing needs for understanding and education regarding family separation and adoption experiences. 

ROK is structured to assist clients in response to new Ontario legislation opening adoption records [Bill 183].

Clients of ROK benefit from experienced and personally trained supportive volunteers.

Individual needs and process are honoured.

Counselling is offered in two phases:

Phase One:

  • Clients arrange a personal interview to determine their goals.
  • Clients are matched with a dual volunteer counselling team.
  • Mutually convenient counselling session dates / times are arranged.
  • Sessions are generally between 60 - 90 minutes, once a week for eight consecutive weeks.

Phase Two:

Optional follow - up peer support group (approx. 12 participants)

  • Six consecutive weekly group meetings.
  • Groups are facilitated by ROK's senior staff.

Community Outreach:

ROK facilitates family separation and adoption related workshops responding to community needs.

Interactive and educational presentations can be topic and group specific.

Examples:

  • Current and past legislation.
  • Search & reunion.
  • Adoption related issues.
  • Constructed case studies.
  • Clinical practice.
  • Adoption misconceptions.

Volunteer Training

ROK seeks dedicated, insightful volunteers to provide supports to clients with a family separation experience.

  • New training sessions are offered every two months.
  • Training consists of three evenings and two Saturdays for a total of 24 hours of training over a three week period.
  • Minimum age of volunteer applicants, 21 years old.
  • Volunteers must successfully complete the training program.
  • All recruitment efforts are to be conducted without consideration of a participants race, ethnicity, sex, disability or sexual orientation.
